Shiba INU's website claims that SHIB is the "DOGECOIN KILLER" and is featured on their own ShibaSwap, a DEX. Shiba Inu currency was established anonymously under the alias "Ryoshi" in August 2020. Ryoshi describes himself as a nobody and unimportant, and he believes that efforts to uncover his identity, even if successful, will be disappointing.

The community of investors were pulled in by the coin's charming charm combined with headlines and tweets from celebrities like Elon Musk and Vitalik Buterin. This led the meme currency to grow in popularity and value shortly. Vitalik Buterin was long thought to be the Shiba Inu's creator, however, he rejected this on the Lex Fridman podcast on June 5, 2021.

Shiba Inu seeks to be the Ethereum-based alternative to Dogecoin's Srypt-based mining process. Shiba Inu and the SHIB token are among a swarm of digital currencies with dogs as themes, including Baby Dogecoin (BabyDoge), Dogecoin (DOGE), JINDO INU (JIND), Alaska Inu (LAS), and Alaskan Malamute Token (LASM). These lower-valued currencies have attracted investors who missed the Dogecoin surge from 0.0002 to roughly 0.75 USD.

Shiba Inu was listed on one of the prominent exchanges as one of the largest US-based crypto markets, on September 17, 2021. This announcement drove the Shiba Inu price to surge by more than 40% in the next two days, bringing the meme doge token back into the limelight.
